About Neck Pain
If you suffer from neck pain, you’re far from alone. According to a survey from the National Centers for Health Statistics, about 15 percent of Americans will experience severe neck pain in any three-month period. That means 45 million people are suffering from neck pain at any given time. About two-thirds of the U.S. population – more than 200 million people – will experience neck pain at some point in their lifetime.
Acute Neck Pain Causes
The most common causes of neck pain—muscle/tendon strains and ligament sprains—heal within a few days or weeks. Many cases of strains and sprains result from overuse or overextension, such as from:
- Poor posture
- Sleeping in an awkward position

Chronic Neck Pain Causes
When neck pain lasts or keeps coming back over a period of several months, it is typically due to spinal degeneration from wear-and-tear over time (also called cervical spondylosis).
- Cervical degenerative disc disease
- Cervical osteoarthritis
- Cervical herniated disc
