Stem Cell Injections

NeoSpine offers stem cell injection treatments for patients that suffer from spine pain, back pain, and degenerative disc pain. This leading edge treatment is shaping the future of spinal care as our doctors take advantage of the body's innate ability to heal itself. The stem cell therapy procedure is both quick and minimally invasive. This amazing development in spinal care uses the patient's own cells as a method of treatment.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are cells in the human body with no predetermined function. These cells can become any type of cell and carry out any necessary function in the body. The human body produce billions of stem cells and medical studies have shown that by gathering them and placing them in an area of damaged tissue, the cells can grow into new healthy cells and replace the previously existing damaged cells.

What are stem cell injections?

Stem cell injections are an innovative medical procedure using the person's own stem cells to replace diseased spinal tissue. NeoSpine's doctors were the first ever to perform this procedure for back pain in Washington state.

The stem cell injections performed by NeoSpine are minimally invasive and are performed in our outpatient surgery center. Relief from pain can be experienced in less than two weeks time.

Please note however that stem cell injections treat one part of the problem. Our caring specialists also work with patients on an overall lifestyle change and treatment plan that generally includes physical therapy as well as an anti-inflammatory diet. When these treatments are taken in conjunction they work together to improve the body's mechanics and prevent future pain.

What is the procedure used for stem cell injections?

The first step in the stem cell injection procedure is to extract bone marrow from the pelvis. The stem cells which will be used for treatment are found in this bone marrow. A centrifuge is used to spin the cells at high speed which separates them from other components of the bone marrow. Centrifuging is an advanced separation technique developed by NeoSpine's partner, Celling Biosciences. The fully prepared stem cells are then injected into the damaged discs. Complete accuracy is assured by the use of an ultrasound to guide the injection. This outpatient procedure only takes an hour or so and can be performed right in our office.

  1. The bone marrow is extracted (aspirated) from the patient's pelvic bone (hip).
  2. A centrifuge is used to separate the stem cells from the other components of the bone marrow.
  3. The stem cells are injected directly into the disc or joint using ultrasound imaging.

What are stem cell injections used to treat?

A number of injuries can be treated using stem cell injections including: degenerative disc disease of the spine, degenerative joint disease of the hip or shoulder, meniscus tears, arthritis, Achilles tendon injuries, sacroiliac (SI) joint pain, rotator cuff injuries, and more.

Treaments such a strengthening muscles through physical therapy can help alleviate pain, but when disc degeneration occurs the traditional treatment has been surgery. Now, however, adult stem cell therapy has become an excellent, non-surgical, alternative for the treatment of low back pain and disc degeneration.

Stem cell therapy is a powerful treatment that can also be used in other areas of the body to help joint abnormalities like knee arthritis and Achilles tendonitis, or for active, older adults to postpone joint replacement surgery. It can even be used to extend the careers of professional athletes.

At NeoSpine we offer stem cell injections for back, hip, knee, and other pain. Please call (253) 841-8939 or contact us via email to schedule a consultation.

Are stem cell injections ethical? Do the stem cells come from embryos?

The stem cell treatment offered by NeoSpine is completely ethical. It uses adult stem cells extracted from the patients own body. Our treatment does not use embryonic stem cells

Am I a candidate for stem cell therapy?

You may be a candidate for stem cell therapy. The best way to determine if you would benefit from the procedure is to come in for a consultation. You may not be a candidate for the procedure if your spinal degeneration is such that the structure of your spine is damaged. For example, if you have broken your back or if you have severe scoliosis then your spine may not be structurally sound.

Patients who have early to middle range degeneration can expect the most benefit from stem cell injections. Patients who are on an anti-coagulant such as Coumadin or are suffering from cancer are not eligible candidates for stem cell therapy. Schedule a consultation today to find if you are a candidate for stem cell injections.

Is stem cell therapy safe?

Stem cell therapy that uses your own adult stem cells is considered safe. There are always some risks such as the injection causing infection, bleeding, or nerve damage, but there is zero possibility of an allergic reaction as the stem cell injections use stem cells from your own body.

How long does the stem cell injection procedure take?

Stem cell injections are a quick procedure that take place right in our offices at NeoSpine and usually take about an hour. To start with you will need a consultation with one of our physicians to properly screen and diagnose your pain. As an outpatient procedure you will be able to leave directly after the injection and should expect results within 4-6 weeks.

What is the recovery time from stem cell injections?

Stem cell injections require no real recovery time. As with any shot, there will be some localized pain around the injection site, but after the quick, in-office procedure you will be able to leave and immediately resume daily activities.

More information about stem cells may be found on the Celling Biosciences website.
