Spinal Fusion Surgery

What is Spinal Fusion Surgery?

Spinal fusion surgery permanently connects two or more vertebrae in the spine into a single unit. The surgery eliminates all motion between the discs by fusing them together to create a solid bone.

Spinal Fusion Surgery

Why have Spinal Fusion Surgery?

When doctors can pinpoint the source of your pain to the motion of two vertebrae, they may opt to perform spinal fusion surgery. By eliminating motion between the discs, the pain associated with that motion is also stopped.

Spinal fusion surgery can relieve symptoms from a variety of back issues including:

  • Scoliosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Tumor
  • Infection
  • Fracture
  • Age-related spinal degeneration

Is Spinal Fusion Surgery Safe?

Like any surgery, spinal fusion surgery has some risks. You should discuss these risks with your doctor before any procedure. Many patients who undergo spinal fusion surgery experience a significant reduction in pain after the procedure. New technology has enabled minimally invasive spinal fusion surgery, reducing risks and shortening recovery times.

Additionally, NeoSpine performs spinal fusion surgery in an outpatient setting at our ambulatory surgical center.

Spinal Fusion Surgery Recovery

Because the end result of the surgery is for two discs to fuse into one, recovery takes time. The bone may not be completely hardened for two months, but a successful surgery will improve patient comfort much more quickly.

At NeoSpine, our team uses state-of-the-art grafting techniques to minimize discomfort. During rehabilitation, you will be taught how to move to keep the spine in proper alignment. Like any surgery, your activity level will be reduced immediately following the surgery. As you recover, your doctor will clear you to participate in more strenuous activity.
